Adobe User Group - South Australia

Each month, Digital Lamb hosts the Adobe User Group South Australia (AUGSA). We encourage any enthusiastic Adobe Software user to come along and join the fun - it’s FREE to join!

On the second Monday of every month, members meet to discuss Adobe products including handy tips and tricks and showcase new product features. Each month has a different software theme with members or guest speakers presenting. It’s a great opportunity to meet other Adobe users who share the same passion for Adobe products. It is also a great opportunity to discover what others are doing with the extensive Adobe software package.

The evening starts off with friendly networking over some light refreshments, followed by the feature presentation. Any Adobe user is welcome, simply join by filling out the Sign Me Up! form.

Crowd Funding Your Project

This month, Steven Ready from Digital Lamb will be talking about their crowd funding project, Friends on the Fridge. Friends on the Fridge is a set of magnet pieces that can be used to create custom characters and scenes on your refrigerator.

The presentation will cover:

  • Overview of crowd funding
  • Creating the campaign with Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver
  • Basic video editing inside of Photoshop CS6

Josh has been working with BC for the past few years, over which time it has seen some significant changes. Josh will walk through some of the key features the CMS has to offer and give some examples of how the platform is perfect for designers who aren't necessarily developers.

With BC at the centre of Adobe's new Creative Cloud Digital suite, it's a great time to learn a little more about what it has to offer.

Insight into Illustrator - Victor Ortegon

Join us this month to here Victor Ortegon share some of his insight into Illustrator.

The session will cover some basic principals for those new to the program as well as some useful tips for advanced users. Victor will demonstrate using a mixture of text effects, logos and his illustration work.

Victor Ortegon is a freelance Graphic Designer who has been using Illustrator for over 15 years. Victor also won the best packaging award in the 2006 for the Corona Can in Mexico which is now used world wide.

Photoshop Illustration - Rowan Dodds

This week award winning commercial artist and illustrator, Rowan Dodds, will be presenting a tutorial on how to use Photoshop to create some of the textual effects he achieves in his digital illustration.

For over 5 years Rowan produced illustrations, retouched photography and designed elements for countless national and international campaigns working for the renowned advertising agency – Young & Rubicam (now George Patterson Y&R). In 2002, he went solo launching as InkSplat Studios and has since been awarded the JIA International Illustration Award 3 years running (2007 – 2008 – 2009).

Adobe Fireworks is a bitmap and vector graphics editor for rapidly creating website prototypes and application interfaces. Peter will be demonstrating five features he uses on a regular basis:

Simple Contact Form (connecting Flash to PHP) - Steven Ready

The first meeting for 2012 will kick off on February 13th. Steven Ready from Digital Lamb will go through a basic tutorial of how to set up a contact email form that uses PHP to send the email message. The code can also be modified to use with a HTML based form. Bring along your USB on the night if you would like a copy of the source files.

Using Flash and After Effects - Levi George

Monday - Novemeber 14, 2011

This month Levi George will be showcasing the new animated series of short films titled "Livin' with Steve" (not based on yours truly). Nate is an eccentric young man, who just wants to hang out with his friend Steve. Steve, however, is a flesh eating zombie who just wants to attack everyone close to Nate. Levi will show a couple of episodes from the series and then discuss the work flow of using Adobe Flash and After Effects used to create each episode. Yes, having an animated series about a flesh eating zombie does call for gratuitous violence so viewer discretion is advisable.

This month, the good people at Hyde Park Press have invited the Adobe User Group out to their printing factory. Colin will share with the group some valuable tips for setting up PDF files for commercial printers. What you wanted to know but were afraid to ask, this presentation focuses on preparing PDFs correctly from Adobe InDesign, specifically: PDF export options, Preflight Panel and Dos and Don'ts within InDesign files. After the presentation and questions, members are welcome to light refreshments and a guided tour of the factory.

Automating InDesign: Speeding Up Repetitive Tasks - Chris Drabsch

Chris Drabsch from Daydream Graphics will be speaking on the topic of methods and processes that can speed up repetitive tasks, layout and presentation in Adobe InDesign CS5. Specifically, Chris will demonstrate how to set up and use InDesign's Data Merge feature to quickly insert and manage large quantities of images, headings, descriptions and other content into a catalog layout; and how to automate the appearance of these items using text, paragraph and object styles. He will then discuss other tips and tricks that can help speed up the InDesign workflow.

Steve Ready - Making Money from Flash Games

This month we will be looking at the various ways of monetising Flash games with the considerations and advantages of each model. It will be a discussion based evening and participation from the audience is encouraged, especially from people who have personal experience. Our case study will use Professor Lambo’s Magnificent Maze which is currently in public beta release on Facebook. 3D in Flash - Matt Thomson

This Monday we have Matt Thomson demonstrating some of the 3D capabilities of Flash. He will discuss the native 3D available in the current Flash Player using AS3 as well as a look at the new Molehill API which is currently in beta. The new API offers real GPU performance and is going to revolutionise online gaming when it is released. Matt will show some examples of basic code along with some demonstrations of his work and what other developers are producing.

This month we will showcase a series of 5 short Flash animations developed for Hospitality Group Training. The animations use a mixture of older Flash techniques as well as the use of the bind tool and other CS5 features. We will look briefly at the sort of situations when the bind tool is best used.

The Adobe User Group will be wrapping up for the year on Monday 8th of November. The final event for the year will be an informal, social evening. Come along to network and chat about Adobe products and services. We will be watching the newly released video about the 3D capabilities of Molehill (5 min) and of course the customary Adobe package giveaway for people who have attended over the last few months. With Google's Android OS now natively supporting AIR applications, Flash developers can leverage their existing skill-set to start developing Android apps. In this session we'll be looking at publishing content for Android with Flash CS5. We'll test some content using the desktop Android emulator/debugger, as well as on an Android device. We'll also take a look at the new AIR 2.0/Flash 10.1 gesture API, as well as some of the APIs that are now available.

Joshua Kernich from Gamelearn will discuss the design and development of Juba, "a child-driven and teacher-guided application that nurtures kids' natural desires to explore, create and learn by immersing them in a digital world of multi-sensory discovery and story-telling." User's of this application include one of America's largest child care centres.

Josh will talk about some of the technical issues associated with the Flash development as well as the considerations involved in designing an interface for preschool children. The discussion will also cover how a product designed for use in an educational environment can achieve its learning objectives while remaining fun and engaging for users.
